Planning the Perfect Fundraiser

Fundraising events are great ways to help bring in revenue for your non-profit group or for a friend/relative in need.  Here are some helpful tips to make sure you have the perfect event that makes sure the money comes in and stays with the cause you are supporting.


1.     Purpose

Before you go a step further, you need to know your “why”.  Starting with why will help you gain clarity and help direct all of your activities to a central focus. Your why is what will energize people to volunteer, show up and spend money!



2.     Set your goal

 How much money do you want to raise at your event?  Gear every part of your planning to meet this goal.  Make sure you share this goal with EVERYONE- volunteers, attendees, vendors- everyone!  People will want to help you meet this goal if they know!


3.     Budget

Once you know your goal for fundraising, use this to budget all of the expenses.  Be sure to leave a little extra for unforeseen costs


4.     Marketing

Determine who and how you will market your event.  Make sure to include your vendors in helping to get the word out. They want you to be successful, so leverage their contacts to drive participation.


5.     Vendors

Choose vendors who want to see you succeed and can bring ideas to the table. Don’t always look for the cheapest or for the vendors who will “do it for free”.  Remember, they have to make a living to and pay their staff.  However,  a good vendor should work with you on your budget and help you come up with ideas to meet your fundraising goals.  You want vendors to be your partners!


6.     Sales

How will you collect money for tickets?  Will you have early bird pricing and different levels of contributions, such as VIP seating?  Decide on these early and be sure to include in your marketing.


7.     Thank You

Don’t forget this very important step.  Thank anyone and everyone who helped make your event a success.  You will want to call on these same folks year after year to support your cause and thanking them is a great start to getting their contribution for next year’s event!
